When writing your college essay you might not know where to begin. It is good to take your time and keep these tips in mind.
Tell your story
Mention your background for example:
- Where did you grow up?
- Family dynamic or values
- Relatable stories that have shaped your identity
Mentioning one or two of these details will make you relatable and stand out from other applicants. Your letter will be unique and personal. Remember this is still a college essay, so keep in mind length and relativity.
List your attributes and activities
Make a list of your qualities, skills, and activities. Most colleges are looking for someone who is well rounded and entail different qualities and attributes. Limit yourself to a few of each; you may have to mention a few more on other parts of your application, you don’t want to sound repetitive.
Mention your goals
List the goals you plan to achieve while in college. Some questions you might want to consider are
- What do I expect from college?
- How will I get the most out of my experience?
- What is the best way to make use of my time while in school?
Once done considering these questions, mention how the school will help you achieve your goals.
Explain a challenge you have dealt with
Think of a time you dealt with a challenge and how you over came it. You can also mention what lessons you learned and why/how it shaped your life. An example like this can describe your way of thinking and how you work under pressure.
Keep it short
I know most of us have many stories to share, but remember this is just an introductory letter. Don’t over mention details; it is easy to get off track. Save other information for college interviews or other events.
