Expressions was joined by Jordan Mittler for last week’s Instagram Live interview! Jordan is a Sophomore in high school from New York who started his own business, Mittler Senior Technology four years ago. We were thrilled when he agreed to join us for an interview and hear his story on how he started his business as a teen. Here’s what he had to say:
What made you decide to launch your business?
Jordan has always had a passion for technology. One day his parents gifted his grandparents with smartphones to replace their flip phones and they had no idea how to navigate their phones. Jordan showed them the basics of texting, checking emails, and surfing the internet. He realized that his grandparents couldn’t be the only seniors struggling with this same issue. He then helped another senior at a nursing home and he realized there was more that he could do. That’s when he started Mittler Senior Tech.
How does your business work?
Jordan took it upon himself to create a curriculum and has created a 10-week program for seniors to sign up and learn new technology. Each session, he offers the class to 20 seniors, once it ends another 20 can enroll. His school actually lets him host his classes there every Sunday. Classes last about an hour with 40 minutes being focused on computers and the remaining 20 minutes on smartphones.
How has COVID-19 affected your business
Due to COVID-19 Jordan has had to cancel all of his in-person class sessions. He switched over to zoom classes which was a challenge in itself. Jordan spent a week getting his students set-up on zoom. In addition, he’s altered his curriculum a bit to focus on material that is relevant to the current circumstances. Focusing on Facetime, accessing the news, and showing them how to communicate today. Going virtual has also given him the opportunity to expand his business outside the New York City region.
How do you juggle being a business owner with school life?
Jordan has actually managed his time very wisely! He conducts his classes on Sunday so it doesn’t interfere with his school schedule. In addition to that, he prepares his curriculum in the summer so it doesn’t take up his time during the school year. He occasionally communicates with his students during the week through email but not very often.
What advice do you have for other teens who may be starting a business?
Jordan’s advice for other teens is if they see a problem try and find a solution for it. That’s what he did, he saw a problem, found a solution. There are a lot of ways to start your business, create a website, social media is easy to create for your businesses and over time your business will grow. Just stay with your goals and focus on making a difference.
